Why Clyde Edwards-Helaire Has Superstar Potential
Clyde Edwards-Helaire
After an incredibly abnormal NFL draft that began on April 23, there were some questionable picks leaving many eager fans with concerns. We are going to break down one of the most highly regarded rookies and his potential going forward in the National Football League.
Arguably, the most out of the ordinary selection of the first round belongs to the reigning Super Bowl champion, Kansas City Chiefs. Although Andy Reid has proven to be one of the most respected offensive minded coaches over his 28 years coaching in the NFL, yes 28, his selection of running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been creating a lot of discussion. Prior to an unmatchable season by the LSU tigers, home of the new Chief as well as 12 other newly drafter NFL players, Helaire was not even spoken about as a first round draft pick. However, led by the magic of Joe Burrow and Steve Ensminger, the offensive coordinator, positional players on LSU gained large amounts of publicity.
After posting 1400+ yards rushing as well as nearly 500 yards receiving, Helaire quickly became regarded as a consensus second round draft pick with first round potential. Leading up to the draft, and even on draft night, D'Andre Swift was expected to be the first RB taken off the board (with Vegas odds of -200). Given this information prior the draft, it came as a bit of surprise that Reid was willing to use his first round pick on Edwards-Helaire.
Every college football player's dream, probably many of the NFL guys too, is to play alongside Patrick Mahomes. The man is truly incredible. At just age 24, Mahomes has accomplished what a vast majority of all the players in the NFL will never achieve in a full career. Mahomes' resume includes: record setting league MVP, Super bowl champion (and favorite to repeat), and a Super bowl MVP. Who wouldn't want to play alongside Mahomes? This is why Helaire is going to have such a high ceiling, as well as a high floor, joining the Kansas City offense. With so many other weapons including Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Mecole Hardman; Helaire is being placed into an offense where all he can do is succeed.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire has already been placed under great expectations for the upcoming NFL season. Fantasy Football managers are salivating at the opportunity to draft a running back playing alongside Patrick Mahomes. Helaire, especially, fits Mahomes play style as Mahomes averages the most yards per attempt while targeting running backs. At LSU, Helaire has proven that he can be a realiable RB both on the ground and in the air. These attributes are going to take him a long way in the NFL. For the more risky Fantasy Football owners, we see Helaire going in the late second round, although we are more comfortable taking him in the third round. Being a part of this pass first offense for Edwards-Helaire is only going to benefit him as he can succeed in the passing game and be used as an unexpected weapon in the running game.
